Fort Bend County Emergency Services District No. 7 (FBCESD 7), operating as Fresno Fire and Rescue, was issued a Public Protection Class (PPC) of ISO Class 3, in all areas within five miles of a fire station, by the Insurance Services Office (ISO). The new rating will become effective on July 1, 2022.
“We know what an improved ISO rating can mean to our homeowners and local businesses. This is also a great indicator that our fire department is operating at a high-performance standard, and we are providing value to our community,” Fire Chief Anthony Bates said.
ISO uses a 100-point scale to conduct a field survey and score how well prepared a community is for fire suppression. The score is based on four categories using the Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS). These include Emergency Communication Systems (10 points); Fire Departments, personnel, capabilities, training, equipment, etc. (50 points); Water Supply (40 points); and Community Risk Reduction (extra credit potential of up to 5.5 points). The FSRS includes standards set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
The new rating will cover approximately 90% of FBCESD7 jurisdiction, these areas are within five miles of a fire station. Any area that is more than five miles from the nearest fire station is automatically rated an ISO Class 10 by ISO. Previously, Fresno Fire and Rescue had no PPC rating, with only the City of Arcola having an ISO Class 6 within city limits and ISO Class 7 in the unincorporated surrounding areas.
“We will strive to provide the best possible service to our community. Together the district and fire department are committed to continuously improving our service in accordance with our strategic plan,” Bates said.
A lower PPC score for Fresno Fire and Rescue may translate to a lower insurance premium for the businesses, homeowners, or renters who receive fire protection from FBCESD7.
